TIMBER TYPES
MERBAU (Intsia bijuga I. palembanica)
Merbau is a large hardwood native to South-East Asia from the Malaysian mainland through Indonesia to New Guinea. Merbau timber is widely available in Australia and is highly regarded for a broad rage of applications. The timber has a heartwood orange-brown to brown or dark red-brown. In Asia it is used regularly for furniture, panelling, boat building and veneers whilst in Australia it is imported for flooring and joinery.
BENGKIRAI (Shorea laevifolia)
Bengkirai is very common throughout Malaysia and Indonesia. being a large hardwood it has a growing range of 30 to 60 metres high. Bengkirai is dense but contains little silica and is therefore relatively easy to work for a beatuiful surface finish. The timber has a heartwood yellow brown, reddish brown and sometimes puplish brown. Bengkirai has fine to medium texture, even with the grain wavy and interlocked. It has been widely used in South East Asia as a heavy construction timber as well as window joinery and boat building.
COCONUT (Cocos nucifera L.)
Coconut is very common throughout the tropics, but was planted as a crop in the early 20th Century. Being a hardwood it has a growing range of 25 metres high. Coconut is relatively easy to work for a beautiful surface finish. This is because coconut trees have no growth rings, branches etc. it is therefore free from knots. The timber has a colourtone from golden to near ebony, with dark brown flecks. We mainly use coconut timber in our pavilions and gazebos for posts, flooring, beams and roofing frames.
ROOF TYPES
THATCHING
Thatch has been used throughout Indonesia for hundreds of years as a traditional roofing system. The main benefit of using Balinese thatch is in it’s natural insulation qualities - high insulation value provides the coolest shade in summer and retains the heat in winter. Thatch’s natural characteristics also provide 100% UV protection.
SHINGLE
Ironwood is used to manufacture all our shingled roofing. Ithas been used for hundreds of years throughout Indonesia and is one of the most durable timbers. 5mm thick shingles are overlapped in four layers in construction of all our shingled roofing ensuring a lifespan of up to 30 years. All our gazebos, pavilionsand spa huts shingled roofing is prefabricated. Each roof panel has already been constructed in the factory for easy assembley at destination. All our shingle roofing comprises of four layers of rattan or bamboo weaved interior layer, plywood protective aluminium foil then outer iron wood shingles. This shingle roofing system ensures maximum climate protection and is perfectly suited to designs using exposed ceilings.
CANVAS
All our canvas roofing type pavilions use canopy fabric made from 100% solution-dyed acrylic fibres. The colour, locked deep inside the fabric, is fade-and weatehr-resistant. The canopy is 100% opaque, waterproof and also protects against UV rays, wind, rain. Our canvas roofing is light in weight, attaractive, durable and long lasting. Canvas roofing add a “modern feel” to our traditionally constructed gazebos and pavilions and is becoming a popular alternative roofing type to thatch and shingle.
